The space bears the name of the most international tenor the Canary Islands have ever known and was designed by the architect Óscar Tusquets. It also featured the sculptural intervention of Juan Bordes. Undoubtedly, its construction, which took four years, revitalised this area of the capital and numerous artists of national and international calibre have performed on its stage.

This unique auditorium was designed, as Tusquets conceived it, as a «fortress that protects and a lighthouse that orients». A building with the silhouette of a castle whose ground floor sits on a plinth of volcanic rock. As the auditorium says, «the sculptor Juan Bordes converted what he called ‘an inhabited rock’ with his sculptures».

In addition, on its fifth anniversary in 2002, the auditorium was extended with two new halls: San Borondón and Alegranza, while in 2010 the multi-purpose hall was inaugurated, which four years later would be renamed the Jerónimo Saavedra Acevedo Hall.
