Vegueta
During the discovery of America, Christopher Columbus had to make a stop in Gran Canaria due to the breakage of the rudder of La Pinta, one of his ships.
For this reason, in the district of Vegueta we can find the Casa de Colón museum, located in the place where the discoverer of America stayed during his stay on the island.
Castillo de Mata
This fortress was created as a defence against pirate attacks and important corsairs such as Van der Does or Drake. Today, this museum allows us to learn about the history of the city since the 15th century.
It can be visited free of charge, but guided tours are also available for groups by appointment.
Cueva Pintada
In the municipality of Gáldar we find this space converted into an archaeological park. It is the ancient home of the aboriginal Canary Islanders, where we can find the most significant rock paintings in the archipelago.
It is stipulated that these graffiti may signify the creation of a lunar and solar calendar.
Calle Mayor de Triana
The Calle Mayor de Triana is currently one of the most visited and most important shopping areas in Gran Canaria.
It was the place where the first businesses were set up in the 19th century. Around it, we can find other emblematic places of the city such as the Literary Cabinet, the Pérez Galdós Theatre, the neighbourhood of Vegueta, etc.
Catedral de Santa Ana
The construction of the Diocese of the Canary Islands began in 1504 under the orders of King Ferdinand II of Aragon and Queen Isabella I of Castile.
It took four centuries and several architects to complete the work on this marvellous cathedral. Come and enjoy this historical monument and other places of the city through tours that we can find in it.
Castillo de La Luz
It was built as a defensive fortress by the Crown of Castile. This monument has been declared a Historic-Artistic Monument in 1941 and Spanish Historical Heritage due to the defensive importance of this defensive architecture.
