The Viera y Clavijo Botanical Garden is the largest botanical garden in Spain. It is made up of 27 hectares where we can observe a wide variety of flora. Today we will show you this beautiful place located on the island of Gran Canaria.
Located to the northeast of the capital Gran Canaria, this botanical garden is made up of exotic plant species and more than 500 endemic plants, some of which are in danger of extinction.
The founder of the Viera y Clavijo Botanical Garden is the Swede Eric Sventenius. The great project of this botanist throughout his life was to create a botanical garden of Canarian flora.
The most outstanding things that we can find in this place are:
- A 7,000 square metre reserve full of pines, dragon trees and palm trees.
- An exotic palm grove, which welcomes the visitor.
- The cactus garden, with 2,000 specimens.
- The Macaronesian
- The laurel forest
The operation of this botanical garden is oriented towards scientific knowledge of the exclusive floral diversity of the Canary Islands in particular and of the Macaronesian Region (Azores, Canary Islands, Cape Verde, Madeira and Wild Islands) in general.
To access the Viera y Clavijo Botanical Garden we have two options: the upper access to the garden, which is made from the motorway of the Centre (GC-110) and the entrance takes us directly to the Viera y Clavijo square. And on the other hand, the lower access to the park, which is reached from the Dragonal road (GC-310) and its entrance is the well-known Plaza de las Palmeras.
