It is the largest of the Canary Island Parks as well as being one of the oldest. Its peak reaches a height of 3,718 metres, making it the highest in Spain. It is located right in the centre of the island with a surface area of 190 km2, on an ancient and gigantic volcanic caldera with a perimeter of 45 kilometres, an immense depression known as the Cañadas del Teide.

Teide and Las Cañadas had a spiritual significance for the Guanches, as it was a fundamental area for their survival, especially in summer. Archaeological sites provide the best record of the history of the first settlers on Tenerife. 

The settlement of the fauna is limited by its volcanic and climatic characteristics. The Park has some 5 species and 36 subspecies, some of them endemic, such as tits and gnatcatchers.
